You Get What You Pay For

The jewelry industry is not unique when you consider value for your hard earned dollars. We are all in this to make a profit and build long lasting relationships with our clients. Yet, as the economy has weakened, the pressures of low price offers might seem tantalizing. This trend must be avoided as we continue to be an industry that prides itself of maintaining the highest standards of quality and ethics.

Envisiontec Perfactory, Solidscape T66s and our Gemvision Revo 540 B milling systemIn the growing field of CAD/CAM technology, the landscape is quickly being flooded with new service providers that promise quick turn around and rock bottom pricing. With the surge in the popularity of CAD design, these “fly by night” operations seem to be opening everywhere. How can they offer such incredibly low prices? Why should you avoid falling into the trap?

In the arena of prototyping, there are many different machines used today to produce the output of the CAD design. The variation in the technologies are staggering as well as the result. Some machines produce models at literally half the “resolution” as others. Think of the resolution as a photograph. The higher the resolution, the more detail and less grainy. It is virtually the same in the prototyping industry. Machines running at higher speeds and less resolution are inherently less expensive to operate. There are only a small percentage of service providers using the higher resolution machinery to produce high quality models. There are also companies specifically running the better machines at lower resolution just to cut corners and expense. At Innovative CAD Technologies, we follow the philosophy of producing a product that we can be proud of. We are constantly maintaining our equipment in top condition and running them at the highest of resolution. Whether we are using the Envisiontec Perfactory with ERM technology, our two Solidscape T66s or our Gemvision Revo 540 B milling system, you can be assured that the output will be worthy of a quality piece of jewelry.

QualityAS CAD designers, as well as prototypers, Innovative CAD Technologies has seen the result of the new wave of CAD designers who have tried to utilize our prototyping services only. These so called designers are actually beginning to give the CAD/CAM industry a bad reputation. With little or no jewelry making experience, they are preying upon the retailers who want to receive the benefit of CAD design. These designers are offering absolutely bottom end prices but with bottom end results. Many of the designs that they send us to prototype are totally unusable as jewelry. As an industry, many jewelers are trying to compete with numerous “price oriented” outlets and have been successful by maintaining strict standards in quality and value and not trying to compete on price alone. It is no different in the CAD/CAM industry. You really get what you pay for. It is an old adage, but it is so true. We aren’t fooled, in general, by “come on” ads for new automobiles at $50.00 a month, so why do we fall for it in this new area of the jewelry industry? In computer terminology, it is said: “garbage in, garbage out”. It is a stark reality in our business. If you start with a poor model and a poor prototype, you are almost guaranteed a poor result.

Photo-realistic renderingsQuality conscious service providers, such as Innovative CAD Technologies, can offer an array of tools to make your business more profitable. We will not skimp on the important features that help you clinch a sale. We provide high quality, 3D, photo-realistic renderings that can be utilized to finalize the sale and create a library of custom designs. Our CAD designers have years of experience in jewelry manufacturing as well as computer design.

Finally, by utilizing the best equipment available for prototyping and running them at the highest resolution, we can provide a model of superior quality that will increase your reputation in the field. By starting with excellent design, providing the best prototype model, great casting results are easily attained. So the next time you see price oriented, low ball quotes, think of what it is you are providing your clients. Jewelry uses precious metals, stones, etc, because we, as a society, value jewelry. To provide something less than high quality is a disservice to your clientele and the industry in general.
